Playing with the Symbols in a Dream Part 2 Dealing with Dreams That Are Both Positive and Negative

Early this morning like 4:45 AM to be exact. I know because I woke up after the dream looked at my watch on the nightstand and debated for 15 minutes about whether I should process it then or go back to sleep. I chose to do it then.

My dream started with me running on dirt roads in the country close to a University. The running was smooth, unlabored, as if I could go forever. Nice, eh? I saw from women who appeared to be on a track team working out and felt very connected to both myself and everyone else. Then, for no apparent reason to my conscious mind, I found myself on an electric scooter going through similar terrain. At first it was ok, but then I was inside what appeared to be a centre of some type where I started doubting whether or not the scooter was mine. I also lost my running shoes. When I proceeded forward, I ended up at a distance part of the university. It was like I was supposed to go to an outing, but the people with whom I was supposed to visit acted like they didn’t know me. At that point I woke up.

In the previous post I was writing about how to play with a positive dream, and then how to deal with a negative dream. In my theory of dreamwork this is what you call a combination dream, a dream that is both positive and negative. When you have a positive dream, it means that you are ready to embrace the new energy and use it in the real world. It does not mean that there will be no difficulties in its application. It means that the way is clear to use it. In a negative dream the way is clear for processing, not application. It is only after processing and inner confirmation that you can begin to apply the new energy out there in the real world especially in a nightmare. It is always better to face the demons in the inner world of processing than meet them out in the real world. Even so, there are times when meeting the demons (negative energy in people) is the necessary learning in the real world. The general rule is that dreams predict the future. If you have a negative dream and do not process it, that is, change it to the positive energy that you are being lead to, then the dream will manifest itself in the real world. Of course, this is symbolic in nature. If you are in a tsunami in a dream, it doesn’t mean you will face a real tsunami, but you will face a tsunami of negative energy if you do not process, transform the dream.

This dream starts out in a positive frame. So I can do what we said in the last post which was to embrace the energy. I can go back into the inner world of the dream and feel what it is like to run tirelessly. The dream does not mean “running” in a literal sense, although it is possible. It means running tirelessly with where I am headed in my life, running with things. What is it like when I can do it tirelessly? In your combination dream you will have positive energy that you can embrace. Embrace it. Hold the memory of what is like, because the negative part of the dream will throw you right out of your positive energy.

In the negative part of my dream you might think that going on an electric scooter would be positive, but in my dream it was not. So I had to get very curious. I had to wonder which is key to understanding a dream. First, isn’t it interesting that I was unconscious of the changeover from running (positive) to the riding on an electric scooter (negative). This tells me that whatever I do is not conscious to me. It happens without me knowing. Whenever I have this experience I know that in real life I am going to have to start catching myself when I go from one process, which is like being in the zone, to the other, which is being in a negative head spin.

When I was meditating about the dream, it dawned on me that the electric scooter was about getting somewhere faster, and then when I am pushed to go faster, all kinds of bad things happened ending in feeling totally disconnected. The running feeling was like being outside of time and space, in the land where time doesn’t exist. The electric scooter feeling is like being pushed to achieve things yesterday. It reminds me about how the western culture operates. I feel rushed, try to get on the scooter, and then end up being disconnected and losing my running shoes. The running shoes are what take me into a different realm of time and then all things are possible.

I went out and did an actual run after having this dream today. A number of times I caught myself feeling rushed. So then I would go back to the runner inside (slow internal process). I would say “feel slowed down inside and work on form, not time”. Everything went well each time I did that.

Dealing with the negative part of the negative aspect of a combo dream is about interrupting an old pattern that is no longer serving you. It is usually begins unconsciously which makes it tricky to recognize. The dream gives you all the information you need to interrupt it. Trust in the dream process.

How do you get into trouble unconsciously in your life?
